Go with Your Gut
You feel a tightening in your stomach.
The butterflies are fluttering and you can feel your anxiety kicking in.
Have you ever felt this way before?
Sure, we all have at one time or another for any number of reasons.
Have you ever used a "gut feeling" to help you make a decision?
It turns out, there are studies that have been done all about using those gut feelings to make a hard choice.
According to an article from the Harvard Business Review,
…studies show that pairing gut feelings with analytical thinking helps you make better, faster, and more accurate decisions and gives you more confidence in your choices than relying on intellect alone. This is especially true when you’re overthinking or when there is no single clear-cut, “correct” option.
ADHDers tend to be overthinkers. When you're not sure of the outcome, it can be intimidating to make a decision, even if you have all the facts laid out in front of you. So, instead of making a decision, ADHDers will sometimes make like an ostrich sticking their head in the sand and avoid the issue altogether.
Unfortunately, ignoring the problem won't make it go away. In fact, it may just make it worse.
Instead of making your brain work overtime trying to decide which way is best, why not use those mindfulness muscles and start noticing what other parts of your body may be trying to tell you.
It may not be an exact science, but I would imagine it's a lot better than pretending it doesn't exist.
So, the next time you're feeling stuck over the options in front of you, why not get a second opinion—from your gut.
Thank you for your time and attention,
Nikki
