Placeholder 02: Signal, Noise, and Four Thousand Weeks

Placeholder is a podcast dedicated to, and produced for, the supporting members of our Patreon community. We’re proud to offer episode one to all, and we invite you to hear more by becoming a patron today.

Any system is only as useful as the data that you put into it. The data's important. Some people are collectors; they put everything in the system and hope that what emerges is brilliance. Some people are minimalists; they only put what they see as brilliant in the system and thereby hope to guarantee that only brilliance pops out. Neither are right. Neither are wholly wrong either. It's a hard line to walk, prioritising your life by way of your inbox, but we're going to give it a meditation this week.

Hard, but not impossible. Though, as Neil Gaiman wrote, "'that which doesn't kill us makes us stronger.' That's as maybe. But that which does kill us, kills us, and ain't that a bitch..."

We're going at this week's show with the aid of Oliver Burkeman's book, Four Thousand Weeks: Time Management for Mortals. It came out only a year ago and yet still, somehow, I feel like I'm late to the party. He's a pro-human productivity pal, Burkeman, and I love the way he provides perspective to our anthropocene struggles. You'll hear his voice throughout this week thanks to the wonderful narration of his audiobook. Please, do yourselves a favor and give it a read or a listen.

Along the way, we talk about connecting personal accounts your work Outlook account, Notion, Coda.io, and Due.

As always, thanks for coming back for this week's show. Remember, if you have questions please post in the #Placeholder channel in Discord. Let us know if you haven't been able to get your Patreon account connected there.

Cheers to all,

Pete
