Help Yourself
If you’ve ever been on an airplane, then you’ve heard the announcement “in the event of an emergency, put on your oxygen mask first before helping your child put on theirs.” While this is good advice on an airplane, the premise is also good advice in parenting.
Many parents of children with ADHD find themselves immediately overwhelmed with new information and a new way of life. A lot of times the parent begins to fade into the background as they are now dealing with doctor’s appointments, school meetings, and learning how ADHD affects their child.
However, did you know: The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends not only behavior therapy for children, but also therapy and training for parents?
This is not new information, but it may come as a surprise to some: your life as a parent matters!
The amount of time and energy being put into the care and treatment of your child with ADHD should also be put into yourself as a parent of a child with ADHD.
Taking care of yourself means taking care of your child.
