Make It Work

What do you do when you can't find the
right tool to get something done?

Do you give up, or do you look for another solution?

It can be frustrating when you just need the 'one thing' to finish a task, but either you can't find it, you can't get it, or it doesn't seem to exist.

It might seem like the only thing you can do is give up and move on. But, what if there was another solution?

Do-It-Yourself

Recently on The ADHD Podcast, Pete and I had the honor to sit down with entrepreneur, inventor, and ADHDer, Kody Lukens.

After Kody was diagnosed with ADHD, he found himself frustrated with the fidget toys available at that time.

First, he didn't want something that looked like a "toy", especially if it was something he would be using in public or at work. Plus, he felt it had the added effect of instantly broadcasting to everyone that he was a fidgeter, or at least he felt he would be perceived negatively for carrying around a "toy". Whether or not others were actually judging him, this was not how he wanted to present himself.

Second, he felt like he wasn't getting the satisfaction from the fidgets being sold, and they felt clunky and difficult to use.

At this point, Kody could have decided there was nothing he could do, and give up and move on.

Instead, he decided to create something new—the exact something he was looking for.

Kody now has a thriving business after the creation of his fidget tool, Stimagz. These small, magnetic pieces are durable, easy to fidget with, and it is highly unlikely anyone would take these small magnetic pieces as a toy.

Kody was able to solve his own problem, and he was lucky enough to have solved a problem a lot of others were experiencing by marketing his invention.

How About You?

Now, I'm not saying this means you need to set to work inventing something and start a business. That model worked for Kody, but it certainly isn't for everyone.

However, you do have the ability to create a solution to your own problem.

If you haven't found a strategy that works well with how your brain works, create a new one!

The best part about finding a strategy or tool that works is, it doesn't matter what it is or if it's something "everyone else is doing", all that matters is that it works for you.

Don't settle for giving up without trying to get a little creative, first. You might just surprise yourself...

Thank you for your time and attention,

-Nikki
