The Mask You Don’t Know You’re Wearing

Somebody asks how you're doing. You've answered before you've even checked. Fine.

It's the smallest mask most of us wear, and probably the one we reach for most. Not the big protective kind you choose on purpose in a genuinely hard moment, work meeting, family gathering, a room that doesn't feel safe. This is the automatic kind. The one that's been running so long you've lost the off switch.

⚖️ What It's Actually Costing You

The bigger the gap between what you're showing and what's true, the more exhausting it gets. That gap doesn't just cost energy in the moment. It costs loneliness, being known only for the performance, never for the real thing underneath it. And it delays help. Nobody reaches out to someone who looks fine, and sometimes you don't even know you need it yourself, because the automatic answer got there before you did.

🎗️ The Rubber Band

Picture two points: where you actually are, and where you're pretending to be. Every "fine" that isn't true stretches the band a little tighter. It can hold for a while. That's its job. But it can't stretch forever. Eventually it snaps, or it exhausts itself and pulls back hard.

🏡 The Home Version

Work "fine" gets talked about a lot. The home version is quieter and, in some ways, worse, because you're saying it to someone who actually wants to know. If you need processing time before you can talk about your day, that's not the same as being fine. It's a different, honest answer that just takes a little longer to arrive. The people who love you can learn to wait for it, if you let them know that's what's happening.

🌤️ Letting the Mask Slip on Purpose

This isn't about ripping the mask off everywhere. It's about picking one safe moment. Someone you trust, someone who won't judge you. And when you tell them the truth, resisting the urge to immediately reassure them, "don't worry, it'll be fine", before the truth has even had a chance to land.

One lighter way in: "Do you want the real answer, or the fine answer?" It names what's happening with a little humor, and gives the other person the choice too.

🩺 Your Body Already Knows

Awareness usually starts in the body before it reaches your conscious mind. Tight shoulders. A pit in your stomach. Something that just feels off, even if you can't name it yet. You don't have to explain it. You can just say, I don't feel on today, and let that be enough for now.

A few questions worth sitting with: Who is actually safe for me to be honest with? What does my body do right before I say fine? And, if I'm honest, who am I performing fine for right now? Sometimes the answer is yourself.

Thank you for your time and attention.
