How to Find a Therapist

They say therapy is good for the soul.

In fact, Psychology Today says “...therapy is just as useful in the wellness model of getting healthy, achieving potential, and making a good life better.”

So you’ve decided to try out therapy. But where do you get started?

Recently on Taking Control: The ADHD Podcast, Pete and I sat down with Dr. Sharon Saline to discuss how to find a therapist and what to look for when searching for a therapy professional.

One thing we discussed was the seeming lack of therapists across the country. Many people are searching for help but finding that a lot of therapists are at capacity and are unable to take on new clients.

So we asked Dr. Saline, what do we do?

Dr. Saline began by suggesting putting your name on a waiting list. While this doesn’t immediately solve the problem, it keeps your name in the field of view of the therapist and you may be chosen to start therapy sooner than you think.

If you can’t find a therapist in your area, you may want to explore teletherapy. This opens up your search to therapists across the country and gives you a better chance of getting started right away.

You can search for therapists that specialize in ADHD by using CHADD’s search page or ADDCA’s search page for a coach.

While you’re searching for a therapist, don’t forget about the research you can do on your own. There are a ton of great books on living with ADHD, or you can listen to a podcast, like Taking Control: The ADHD Podcast!

Lastly, I wanted to leave you with this quote from our conversation with Dr. Sharon Saline:

...don't give up. I know it's discouraging, but keep at it, keep calling people. The people who call me who email me, who say, "Please, do you have anything I need to be on your list." I have a long list but they're in the field of my vision a little bit more than people who call once and then I don't hear from them again.

Thank you for your time and attention,

-Nikki
