The ADHD Student: Getting to Class on Time!

Every minute matters!

In the podcast Setting up Routines, we talk about understanding the purpose of your routines. Getting to class on time is a great reason to have a routine in place!

Here are a few tips to make that happen!

Practice your commute to and from your different classes

  • Taking the bus? Know the schedule and plan accordingly. Giving yourself enough time to walk to the bus stop and to class.

  • Driving? Before school starts, practice your commute. How long does it really take? What about parking? Be sure to give yourself plenty of time to walk from the parking lot to the building.

  • Walking from class to class - time how long it takes, so you aren’t rushing at the last minute.

Use reminders and notifications

  • It’s too easy to lose track of time, so be sure your reminders are set at the right times and pay attention to them

  • Set more than one if you needed

Daily planning

  • Check your calendar daily

  • Be mindful of where you are and when your next appointment will be

Allow buffer time

  • When planning your day, be sure you have some empty space

  • Allow for distractions

After trying these strategies, if you are still running late, something is happening that you are not aware of. This is the time to track your mornings or whatever time a day it is to figure out how long things are really taking you and figure out what’s getting in your way. With this new awareness, you can then adjust your schedule accordingly.

Thank you for your time and attention!
