Are You Stuck on FOBO?

Recently on Taking Control: The ADHD Podcast, Pete and I discussed a term new to us—FOBO.

What is FOBO?

The term FOBO stands for the Fear of Better Options. This refers to being stuck on making a decision based on the thought that there may be better options available that you can’t currently see.

This fear can pop up at any time for any reason. Maybe you hesitate making plans because better plans might come along. You could linger on accepting a job offer in hopes that a better job offer comes along.

Whatever the circumstance, FOBO can keep you stuck.

How can you beat FOBO?

Here are a few tips you can use to help fight FOBO and make a decision:

  • Educate yourself

Sometimes we don’t make a decision because we don’t have all the facts. Doing your own research or creating a pros and cons list can help you better make an educated decision.

  • Talk it out

It can be really helpful to talk out your decision-making process with someone else. Share how you’re feeling and why. Hearing another opinion may make all the difference.

  • Flip a coin

For those easier decisions, take the responsibility out of your own hands and let fate decide. Flip a coin or roll some dice, whatever the outcome, you can finally say you made a decision.

Whatever tricks you decide to use, the goal is to make a decision. Don’t let FOBO hold you back from moving forward!
