Important Tools for Student Planning
“This school year is going to be different!”
How many times have you said something like this at the beginning of the school year?
A new school year brings with it a clean slate; a chance to start over and do things right this time. If you are a student that struggles with ADHD, a new beginning means a chance to stay on top of your assignments and due dates.
While you may walk on campus with the best intentions, are you also walking in with the best tools to accomplish your goals to make this your best semester yet?
Some of the following tools may seem simple, but using these tools appropriately can be the difference between turning assignments in on time or having to ask for an extension.
The Syllabus
Most professors will hand out a copy of the schedule for the entire semester. This handout will include due dates for projects and important test dates. Utilize the syllabus to add these important dates onto your calendar.
Weekly/Monthly Calendar
A big wall/desk calendar offers the space to create a constant visual reminder of classes and upcoming assignments. Color coding assignments can help keep classes separate and avoid confusion.
Planner
Whether you prefer a standard paper planner or an online task manager, this is where you will plan to do the work for your assignments. Set aside appropriate amounts of study time each day and put them into your planner. Don’t rely on your brain to remember when to stop and study.
Your Professor
Don’t underestimate the wealth of knowledge available from each of your professors. If you are unsure of a due date or how long you should be spending on an assignment, reach out to your teachers. It’s their job to help you be the best student you can be!
Thank you for your time and attention,
