Planning When You Can't Plan
How do you make this work?
In our Q & A with Nikki and Pete, there were several questions on how to plan when there is so much uncertainty in the world. Planning can be difficult for the ADHD mind at any time, regardless if there’s a world pandemic going on or not!
Planning and Organizing are two Executive Functions that the ADHD mind struggles with.
Planning and organizing requires you to be able to break an event or project down into steps. To effectively plan, you need to know your goal, the right steps to reach the goal and how much time to spend on each step.
Nothing about planning sounds easy and then throw in the reality that you need to have a Plan B and C, not only a Plan A right now because we are in a world pandemic.
My number one suggestion when it comes to planning is to find support.
You don’t have to do this alone and depending on the complexity of the project, your best defense in fighting stress is to find the support you need.
Ask a friend, co-worker, supervisor, partner, a coach, a therapist, whoever in your life that you trust.
Many ADHDer’s are verbal processors, they need space to hear their own ideas and connect the dots. Sometimes, it’s easy to get lost in too many details or accidentally miss the most important ones, working with someone allows you to explore and process what’s ahead of you.
Most plans do not go as planned.
Things usually take more time than expected and in some cases cost more money than you expect. The plan is a roadmap to get you from A to B, however there is always more than one way to get to your destination.
Thank you for your time and attention!
