The Facts Around ADHD & The Workplace

The Impact Is Real!

ADHD is invisible, which means the struggles in the workplace are very complicated. Many clients come to coaching to help with time management, organization, and/or prioritizing. In fact if you were to look at the list of executive functions that challenge the ADHD mind, these are all  the same challenges you face at work.

I did a little digging and found a few interesting facts about ADHD & The Workplace:

  • 8 million to 9 million American adults have ADHD, this is about 4% of the population.

  • The worldwide prevalence of adult ADHD is estimated at 2.5%.

  • People with ADHD are at least 1.5 times more likely to develop substance abuse disorders.

  • 47.1% of adults with ADHD have been diagnosed with some kind of anxiety disorder.

  • 20% have difficulties with impulse control.

  • ADHDer’s are 3 times as likely to quit a job impulsively.

  • Only half of the adults with ADHD were able to hold down a full-time job, compared to 72% of adults without the disorder.

  • 60% are more likely to be fired from a job.

  • Adults with ADHD tend to earn less than their peers.

  • When ADHD is left untreated, adults with ADHD lose an average of 22 days of productivity per year.

These are not great stats, in fact they are pretty depressing, but I don’t want you to leave this blog post feeling hopeless, because there are a lot of great resources on how to work with your ADHD. You don’t have to fall into these stats or any other stats you choose not to fall into.

In the next few weeks, Taking Control: The ADHD Podcast, will be doing a series on ADHD & The Workplace, giving you different ideas and strategies on how to navigate your ADHD.

You have options!

ADHD is a protected disability under the Americans with Disabilities Act, you can’t get fired because of you have ADHD, but this doesn’t mean you can’t get fired at all. Here’s a link for more information about the ADA.

Thank you for your time and attention.
