Build It Up
Starting something new can be exciting!
The thought of starting a new project or implementing a new strategy can really boost that dopamine and get you excited to get started.
But what if you forget a day, or get behind?
You soon find you’ve replaced your dopamine rush with guilt and shame. Another strategy fell short of your expectations.
Wait!
Don’t let a setback discourage you from your goals!
Rather than give up on a new strategy, find ways to turn your strategy into a habit.
Creating new habits can be difficult, especially with ADHD, but it’s not impossible! Here are a few tips for building new habits you can start using today:
Start small
It can be easy to want to implement every strategy you hear about, but it’s not reasonable to expect yourself to do it all at once. Choose one thing you want to change and start there.
Set a clear goal
Don’t rely on your brain to remember what you want. Write down a sentence or two about the purpose behind your new habit. Place this somewhere you’ll be sure to see it daily.
Create a timeline
Once you’ve written down the “what” of your new habit, add on the “when”. How often do you want to do this activity? Daily? Weekly? Write it next to your goal.
Ask for help
If you find you’re still having a hard time creating a new habit, ask a friend, family member, or coach to do regular check-ins to help keep you productive and on track.
The longer you stick with something, the easier it will become to do it every day. Remember, creating a new habit takes time, so allow yourself some grace if you find that you stumbled once or twice.
You can do it!
