Not Another New Year's Resolution

The new year seems to bring out the best of intentions in many people. It’s a fresh start; a way to turn over a new leaf and begin again.

Many people use the new year to create resolutions; promises to be better and do more.

Unfortunately, most new year’s resolutions are never achieved. A 2007 study found that 88% of people failed to complete their yearly resolutions!

There has to be a better way!

On Taking Control: The ADHD Podcast, Pete and I have discussed the benefits of creating a theme for your year instead of taking on new year’s resolutions.

A theme can be one word, a phrase, or an ideal that gives purpose or direction to your actions. Having a theme builds in an automatic starting point for when you need to make decisions or work toward a specific goal.

What can I pick as my theme?

Anything can be used as a theme for your year if it means something to you:

  • Productivity

  • Organization

  • Empathy

  • Wellness

  • Be on time

The list is endless!

Once you’ve picked a theme, it’s time to start the application!

Be sure to create reminders for yourself

Write out your theme and put it in different places around your house, office, car, or anywhere else you’ll be sure to get that visual reminder daily.

Creating a theme for your year eliminates the fear of failure and sets you up to succeed!

So, what will the theme of your year be?

Thanks for your time and attention,

-Nikki
