Featured Series: Unique ADHD Strategies that Work - At least most of the time! - Part 2

Sometimes it can be difficult to find strategies that work.

You may even wish they would work some of the time!

This week I’m back to share more of the great strategies that have been shared by the listeners of Taking Control: The ADHD Podcast.

Here are a couple strategies our listeners had for staying focused and using alarms:

Focus:

Find something to listen to

  • A lot of our listeners have shared a need to have some sort of background noise to stay focused. When you’re doing things like cleaning or driving, a podcast or audio book is a great option. For tasks that require more attention to detail, try some music to help keep you on track.

Remember what works

  • It can take some trial and error to find out what works best to keep your attention where it needs to be. After a session of great focus, try writing down what was going on around you. Keep track of things like room temperature, what you ate or drank, time of day, and what you were listening to. You may start to see trends in your focus based on these things. For example, one listener found their focus was often related to making sure they were staying hydrated.

Alarms:

Stay Present

  • When meeting with friends or family, set an alarm for 5 minutes before you intend to leave. This allows you to be fully present for conversation and not lose track of time. When the alarm rings, you can wrap up conversation and be able to move on without the fear of being late to your next activity.

Put yourself to work

  • One listener suggested the iOS app Freaky Alarm. The alarm plays loud, annoying music that continues to sound until you solve a series of puzzles. This listener even took it a step further to include the option of scanning a barcode in a particular room before the alarm will stop. At night, the barcode is on a book in their bedroom, forcing them to be in their room when it’s time to go to bed. In the morning, the barcode is in the kitchen, forcing them to be out of bed and in the kitchen before the alarm will stop.

We have received so many submissions from our amazing listeners; the ones I mentioned above are only a few of the great suggestions Pete and I explore in part two of our series, Unique ADHD Strategies That Work - At least most of the time!
