Wise Words from a Financial Coach Living with ADHD
Everyone has an opinion on just about any given topic—even advice on what they believe is the best way to manage finances.
But, just because people are willing to share those opinions, doesn’t mean you should take the advice—especially when it comes to finances.
Luckily, on a recent episode of Taking Control: The ADHD Podcast, Pete Wright and I had the opportunity to speak with someone who really knows their stuff when it comes to money management and living with ADHD.
Nicole Stanley is the founder and head financial coach for Arise Financial Coaching. During our conversation, Nicole shared so many valuable—and eye-opening—insights on managing money while navigating ADHD.
Here area few highlights Nicole shared and encouraged us to consider:
1. Transform Your Relationship with Money
Many people find they have a less-than-positive relationship with their finances. Nicole emphasized the importance of shifting your mindset around your finances.
Instead of seeing budgeting as a chore or a restrictive task, you can look at it as a empowerment tool to fuel your ability to reach your goals. When you focus on what excites you in life, you can begin to create positive emotional connections to your financial goals, transforming them into something more achievable.
2. Identify the Real Financial Problems
We were surprised to learn that many people tend to misidentify their financial challenges. Nicole outlined five main financial problems most of us might be experiencing:
Spending issues
Fixed expense problems
Income issues
Money management issues
Financial strategy problems
When you can begin to understand which of these applies to your situation, it can help you focus on the right solutions, rather than struggling with ineffective strategies.
3. Embrace Automation and Simplicity
If you have followed The ADHD Podcast for any length of time, you know we are big fans of automating anything and everything, if possible. For ADHDers, complex budgeting methods that include multiple, manual steps, it can lead to frustration and avoidance.
Nicole encouraged using automation tools to manage finances, almost without having to think about it. This can allow you to set up systems that work for and with your lifestyle, which makes money management much less daunting and way more effective.
Now it’s your turn
How do you feel about the tips shared by financial coach, Nicole Stanley? Is there something shared in the tips above that you could start exploring—even today?
I encourage you to explore your options and stay open and curious. By applying these insights, you may find yourself building a healthier relationship with money, and even enhance your overall financial well-being—one step at a time.
Thank you for your time and attention,
