Choose Your Path
“You are not your thoughts…You are the one who chooses to believe them or not.”
The above quote comes from Dr. Sharon Saline on a recent episode of Taking Control: The ADHD Podcast. Pete and I had Dr. Saline on the show to talk about self-compassion.
Lately, I have seen a lot of my clients struggle with finding self-compassion for themselves and their situations, so I thought this was a great time to bring up this topic.
Many ADHDers find themselves dealing with limiting beliefs, or as Dr. Saline calls it, “stinking thinking”. They focus on the negative and struggle to see the positive about themselves or what’s going on around them.
This is where mindfulness comes in.
Put simply, mindfulness is this:
Mindfulness is the basic human ability to be fully present, aware of where we are and what we’re doing, and not be overly reactive or overwhelmed by what’s going on around us.
Mindfulness allows you to look at what’s around you and inside you with no judgement. You are simply an observer of your situation. This practice allows you to identify when you’re having negative thinking or limiting beliefs so you can begin to change that behavior.
Learning to be mindful takes time. It’s not an overnight process. But, once you begin to learn to be aware of what you’re thinking, you’ll be able to change the narrative and move toward a more positive outlook.
