Focus On What You Want

Did You Know That What You Focus On Grows?

In the book, “The Wisdom of Sunday” by Oprah Winfrey, there’s a passage written by Joel Osteen. Oprah talks to him about the power of words, specifically the words that follow, “I am”.

Whatever follows “I am” will eventually find you.

The internal conversation we have with ourselves matters. It can make us feel more energized or it can make us feel overwhelmed.  When we choose to the follow “I am” with something positive, it highlights the feeling we want to have.

When you focus on the positive, the more positive you will feel.

One day, my family was on the way to my daughters gymnastics meet. She said “I am really nervous about this meet.”

Remembering, what I learned, I wanted to share with her the same lesson.

I explained to her that I read this passage and it said, whatever follows the “I am” becomes your main focus. If you continue to think you’re nervous, you’ll continue to be nervous and it will be harder to focus on anything else. It will also get in the way of you really enjoying the moment you are in. What if instead, you said, “ I am excited or I am strong.”

As parents, we never really know if our kids are listening to what we think is great wisdom but I have to say I was incredibly proud when she told me her experience after the meet.

I asked how she felt it went and she said, GREAT! “I think it was one of my best meets.” She continued to tell me that she heard some of her teammates talk about how scared they were. She told me, that in her mind, she was telling herself, “she was brave”.

We all get scared and we all get nervous but we also have the choice to change where we focus our energy.

So, I challenge you, the next time you say “ I am”… really think about what you want to say!

Thank you for your time an attention!
