The Danger In Perfectionism

“When perfectionism is driving us, shame is riding shotgun, and fear is that annoying backseat driver.”

- Brene’ Brown

Perfectionism sounds like it would be a positive characteristic, you like things to be done just right and you set the bar high! This all sounds good until you realize that perfection doesn’t exist.

If you are striving for perfection, then nothing is ever going to be good enough!

Here are some of the dangers of perfectionism:

  • You’ve set the standards so high, you can’t meet them.

  • Decreases your motivation to get anything done.

  • It’s a false sense of security, we think if something is perfect, we can’t get hurt.

  • It’s an edited version of who we are, you won’t try new things.

  • If it’s not perfect, we take the blame.

  • We never feel good enough.

  • Increases shame, stress, and anxiety.

Perfectionism sabotages our efforts and keeps us stuck in the same place…doing nothing.

If you’re not sure how perfectionism fits into your life, think about your inner dialogue. Is the conversation in your head negative or positive? Are you focusing on everything that could go wrong or focusing on everything that is right?

It comes down to one thing…. Your Mindset!

  • What would happen if you strived for excellence rather than perfection?

  • What if you started looking at mistakes as an opportunity to learn and grow?

  • What if you could be proud of the journey you took and not be tied to the outcome?

  • What if good enough, really is enough?
